Rural life is difficult in every country, and Egyptian rural life was no exception. In my time, seventy-five percent of Egyptians were engaged in farming, a lifestyle that entailed long hours of labor. The fellaheen lived in houses built of unfired mud bricks. Their villages clustered along the river and canals that brought them life and prosperity.
