August 15th marks the beginning of the ancient Egyptian calendar – the season of Akhet, the inundation. A ritual is held to honor the god of the Nile, Hapi, to invoke him to bring fertility to the land. Mixing in among the celebrants are vendors: an old man with an armful of paper hats.
