In the spring of 1952 I was in Quasim village with Father Ayrout, who wrote the well-known book The Fellah. I searched all day for an Egyptian youth who embodied the strength and potential of Egypt’s future. I had almost given up hope when I saw this young boy – handsome, determined, and healthy – the perfect subject. He was preparing to leave for home after a day in the field that began at sunrise. His evening would be full of studying, for not only does he feel the responsibility for his family, but also for a future beyond the faas.
