It takes a great deal of skill to sail a felucca because of its large triangular sail that is designed to be its main source of power. However, when the wind is down a craft is laboriously moved by poling. The sailor projects a long pole into the river bed and pulls it toward him as he walks from bow to stern. Another sailor stands at the stern and mans the outboard tiller.
